2011 in Review

Wednesday December 07, 2011

2011 has been a successful year for the YWCA Greater Los Angeles as we've focused on furthering our mission to "eliminate racism, empower women". Thanks to you, our dedicated partners and friends, we have seen many victories - stories of survival, empowerment and thriving. Enjoy highlights from the year, knowing YOU have made all of this possible...

We have continued to offer much-needed services and programs to the greater Los Angeles community. Among the highlights of the year, BizCamp, an intensive entrepreneurship program administrated by NFTE (Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship), provided invaluable business and life lessons for forty Job Corps students. The Junior Achievement Finance Park hosted YWCA After-school program students and gave them an opportunity to participate in a personal financial budget challenge. Job Corps graduated over 500 students. The new Union Pacific facility in East Los Angeles celebrated their one year anniversary. The YWCA celebrated the 16th annual Week Without Violence during the third week of October. YW Sexual Assault Crisis Services was invited to deliver Sexual Assault Training in San Juan Puerto Rico. Over 100 seniors received various services such as financial literacy, ESL classes, and a warm meal at the Union Pacific Empowerment Center.

In 2011, eighty-five percent (85%) of every gift received was allocated to programs; thirteen percent (13%) was spent on general and administrative costs. It costs YWCA GLA two percent (2%) to fundraise. Therefore, on average, 98 cents of every dollar that you donate, YWCA GLA allocates to delivering programs and services. Some stand out partners include: Ralph M. Parson's Foundation, Union Bank and the Weingart Foundation awarded the YWCA/GLA with multi-year grants totaling $600,000 to support the Union Pacific Empowerment Center. JPMorgan Chase Foundation's $80,000 grant focused on Workforce Development. The California Health Foundation in collaboration awarded a $5,000 grant to support Health and Wellness programming across the organization. Additionally, the JPMorgan Chase Foundation gave $80,000 toward the YWCA Career Training Academy. Citibank gave $25,000 toward the YWCA Job Corps BizCamp Asset Building experience.

Specific partner efforts included in-kind donations like NAWBO-LA and Union Bank's clothing drive for professional attire to support Job Corps students while Society of Benefactrix member, Debbie Beavers-Watford, adopted the YWCA Union Pacific Girls Club by donating sewing machines and funds for sewing supplies.

We have honored leaders and celebrated progress. Construction on the 154,000 square feet Urban Campus building was finalized and the YWCA received the certificate of occupancy on November 18th. In May, the YWCA saluted Councilwoman Jan Perry and Kathy Ireland and other "Women Who are Instruments of Change" at the 2011 Phenomenal Women Awards Luncheon. During the summer, the YWCA celebrated its 117th Annual Membership Meeting as an opportunity to celebrate the previous year while looking ahead to the coming year as it relates to those who serve the organization and community. Faye Washington, YWCA Greater Los Angeles CEO, was named a "Woman of the Year" by LA County Commission for Women. On 11/11/11, the YWCA honored Ayahlushim Getachew of Thomas Properties and David Blankmeyer of PCL Construction at the 2011 Black & White Benefactrix Ball.

To celebrate the 2011 year, continue the mission of the YWCA, and further serve the families and women of greater Los Angeles - we have kicked off our "Be an Angel" program. Will you join us and "Be an Angel" this holiday season? To learn more, click here.
