Helping Our Communities One Volunteer At A Time

Thursday March 19, 2009

Bettye has been volunteering her time at the YWCA/GLA's Compton facility since 1997.

She first became involved with the YWCA/GLA when one evening she helped sweep trash at the YWCA in Compton. Because she lives across the street from the facility, Bettye has made the YWCA in Compton a second home.

Bettye is a very motivated volunteer. She contributes her time on her days off from work and makes sure she assists in all areas needed at the YWCA in Compton. Her passion for the organization is clearly noted in the amount of time and effort she puts into her volunteer service.

Volunteers such as Bettye Cooper are a rarity in the nonprofit world. According to a report conducted by the Corporation for National and Community Service, more than one out of every three people who had volunteered in 2006 had not done so again in 2007. It is important for nonprofit organizations to recruit and retain its volunteers because they are a vital part its structure.

At the YWCA/GLA volunteers help strengthen its mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. Volunteers are always welcome at the YWC/GLA and there are several ways to get involved.

Here are some ways you can help:

  • Fund Development: Help raise money and plan events
  • Sexual Assault Crisis Services: Become an advocate for sexual assault victims and make a difference in their lives
  • Youth Programs: Assist with recreational and life skills activities for girls ages 11 to 14
