Union Pacific Emergency Preparedness Fair
On October 22nd, the Red Cross presented their first ever Spanish language Emergency Preparedness Fair at the YW Union Pacific Empowerment Center (UPEC) from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Over 250 community members, including participants from the UPEC, attended the "Mas Listo, Mas Seguro" fair. During the fair, the Red Cross presented CPR classes as well as earthquake and fire preparedness classes - all in Spanish. There was a special puppet show presentation for children to introduce information on what to do in the event of an emergency at home or school. Information booths from various community-based organizations offered information to attendees. The Mexican Consulate encouraged attendees to be prepared with important documents in the event of an emergency. This fair will serve as a model for the Red Cross as they present to other Spanish-speaking communities.

United Way HomeWalk 2011

In an effort to end chronic homelessness in Los Angeles County, the YWCA joined the United Way's 5th annual HomeWalk 2011 on November 19th. LA Lakers Kobe Bryant served as the Honorary Chair of the 5K Run/Walk which took place at Exposition Park. Over the past four years, HomeWalk has mobilized 18,000 participants, raised $1.7 million and funded organizations that have moved 9,000 people into housing. All proceeds go directly back to the community, supporting organizations that move homeless veterans and chronically homeless people into permanent supportive housing.

Senior Programs
Earlier this month, the Union Pacific Empowerment Center (UPEC) took a group of 20 senior participants to enjoy "The Colorful Songs of Broadway presents Happy Holidays". The show was a celebration of the holidays including professionally performed classic songs and sing-a-longs. Especially enjoyable was a small tribute to the holiday classic movie, "White Christmas". This was one example of the many field trips and experiences the seniors at UPEC enjoy throughout the year to address socialization and prevent isolation, a goal of the program. For many of these seniors, these social networking events have been the first time they have traveled outside of the East Los Angeles community.
