Urban Campus Construction Update

Tuesday May 31, 2011

Less than a year ago, the YWCA newsletter reported that construction on the Job Corps Urban Campus was 18% complete. As of today, the project has catapulted to 85% complete and is on-schedule for December 2011 occupancy.

"As construction continues, we are getting so much closer to fulfilling the dream of providing a safe, fully equipped place for Job Corps students in Los Angeles to live, learn and grow." stated Ann Marie Hickambottom, Director, Strategic Planning. "Our dream is becoming a reality for us and the community."

All interior painting, building exteriors and roof are nearly complete.  Permanent power has been established.  Millwork and flooring on level 2 will be completed by the end of July.  Also, the basement kitchen equipment - including a walk-in cooler, refrigerators/freezers, dishwashing machines, ovens and ranges, and other miscellaneous kitchen equipment - has been installed.

The courtyard/amphitheater is taking shape--concrete seat walls have been poured and the walkways and landscaping are being developed. The amphitheater is planned for outdoor assemblies and live performances, including concerts, dances and drama presentations. Other features will include a jumbo LED video wall to display entertainment as well as presentations and lectures.

"From the façade to the smallest of details, we have thought through the functionality and aesthetic of the Urban Campus," continued Hickambottom. "The finished product will be the culmination of years of planning, the committed partnership of staff, donors, community leaders, and the hard work of numerous, focused crews. This building will be a top-notch place dedicated to education and the support of Job Corps students."
